20 Questions: Surfer’s Perspective – Harbor Piers

submitted by Zelda Zinmberman

1. Name: Harbor Piers

2. Team: No team affiliations.

3. Surfing Since: November 2008

4. Favorite Board: Every board has it’s benefits. Over time, I’ve accumulated way too many boards and each one shares its own little space in my heart. I’m a huge fan of my Shark shortboard. It seems to handle fairly well. For sentimental reasons, I love my “Custom handcarved surfboard.” It was my first board (as a noobie) and given to me when I had met Sebastian Saramago at the weather channel epic wave break.

5. Favorite Wave: My favorite wave are fluffies. I’ve spent countless hours at the chi sim learning how to surf them. Every new surfer should really take the time out to learn how to properly surf fluffies, and the skills can carry to every other wave type that exists. My respect goes to those who can surf fluffies.

6. How did you come across surfing on SL and what was your first initial reaction to it?
Initially, I stumbled upon Reaction surf shop and talked to a surfer. I was a noobie. As a surf lover in real life, I was so excited to find out they had surfing in second life! Then I met Sebastian Saramago at the weather channel sim. He gave me my first board. A little bit later, I realized I was hooked.

7. Are you involved in the SLSA (second life surfing association) in any way?
Yes, I am a current member and one time Hall of Fame inductee of the SLSA.

8. What are your thoughts or opinions on the direction on the SLSA from 2012 and beyond?
I am looking forward to the year 2012. I am estatically excited to see what it will bring.

9. What do/did you find positive and negative about it?
The positive is that it’s surfing centered. We love to surf. Everyone who surfs in the SLSA loves to surf. The negative is that in my opinion, the politics of it all can get in the way. However, the simpler, the better.

How would you like to see it improve more?
Improvements? We could improve by having every single person on sl try surfing!

10. Do you compete in any surfing competitions SLSA or non?
I have competed in various non slsa competitions, including mini-comps, and a vibes surf jam. I also compete in SLSA sanctioned competitions. My advise to new surfers however, is that surfing really is about one competition: the competition within yourself. Always surf to have fun.

11. What do/did you find gratifying and dissatisfying about competitions?
I find surfing gratifying. I also love the excuse to kick back and have fun with people of the surfing community. The sense of community is outstanding when everyone comes together for one common purpose… simply, to surf. What do I find dissatisfying? Zelda Zimberman’s trash talk. (just kidding, but really!).

12. How do you feel about the SLSA using non SSI boards for competitions? (ex; HP5, LSD, Action):
If I can be frank (not a guy named frank, but honest), I was somewhat weirded out by this at first. I think my expression to be exact, was … “Wooooahhhhhhh.” Personally it definitely will take some time to learn new boards, but this is great overall… because it promotes SLSA surfing throughout the entire second life population. It’s a good thing.

13. If you are currently inactively involved in competitions (surfing, judging, etc.) what was the reason for leaving? Would you want to come back and participate?
If I miss a competition, it’s usually due to rl commitments. I enjoy surfing in competitions. I’m not a regular competer like some, but I’m an irregular regular competer. Get it?

14. What are your thoughts on the team dynamics?
Is there a team you particularly like? Why?: Teams are a great way to keep motivated and hold practices. Great social support. I particularly like team ______. They are the best. I currently am not on a team.

15. Is there anyone on here that particularly had an impact when it came to surfing, mentoring, and overall being a role model for you?
Can I list them? Sebastian Saramago, Triston Mayo, Wicked Carver, SexyBoy OH, Kimmy Jigsaw, Bobbi Lavel, Nash, Lissa Pinion, and VW. There are so many more, but when I had started to surf, these people helped me out a lot and shaped my view of surfing on second life. From SB’s 8 hour practices to Wicked’s carving, to Bobbi’s surf lessons, and the welcoming attitude of everyone else. This is what makes surfing on second life so amazing.

16. What was your favorite moment or memory on surfing here?
My very first competition…coming in 11th place. It was a lot of fun. Also, all the moments at Mori. There were a ton of them. Godddammm boyyy, i miss that place.

17. Is there anyone you know or knew that isn’t active as much in surfing and would like to see come back?
SB! and Triston Mayo. What happened ?

18. Many people have strong opinions when it comes to SL surfing and RL surfing. What is your take on the comparison?
They are what they are. You obviously can’t really compare the nitty gritty components to physical surfing verses a keyboard… but the similarity lays in the feeling you get when you are waiting for a wave to roll in… or out past the breakers, just you and the ocean.

19. Do you have any advice for new SL surfers on here?
Surf a lot. Try all the surf sims you can find. Meet other surfers and ask for tips. Mostly anyone is more than willing to help out as much as possible. Feel free to IM me for advise.

Most of all, welcome to surfing.

20. Any other thoughts? Yes.

SLSA Asylum Break Pro Results

The stands were rocking (thanks to excellent music and awesome peeps), the waves were rolling, and the surfers were ripping it up! Because OMG – look at these scores! I haven’t seen scores this high in, well, since the last time they were this high. New names, old familiar names! The old-timers proved they still have the right stuff, but they better watch out, because the groms aren’t going to be groms much longer. They were definitely given everyone a run for their money! And placing high enough to prove it.

Personal Note: I had the most awesome time, even if I totally blew it in my surf-off. The company was excellent. A bad day surfing is better than a good day working (and it really wasn’t a bad day). I got pressed into being the MC for the Semi-Finals and the Finals because the scheduled MCs surfed too well. And anyone that knows me,  knows I love to babble. And if they didn’t know it before, they know it now. Once I got the mic, they couldn’t pry it out of my hands until the trophies had been awarded. 🙂 And finally, DJ Zone caught on to the fact that I love the Foo Fighters and turned the last hour into my own personal show.

So where is the next comp, cuz I am chomping at the bit… oh yes, Chi and fluffs. Woot! Watch out here I come!

Monkey State Park

Syx Toshi has created a beautiful new sim for us to enjoy and surf at.  Monkey State Park has a long sandy beach surrounded by plants and trees. Running behind the sim is a beach access road, lighthouse and a rocky out cropping being constantly splashed by the surf.

Syx sent out the following group message via Monkey Cove Surfers:

Hi Monkeys,

Been a long time, but I’m happy to announce the opening of Monkey state Park. This is a single sim dedicated to surfing and thats it! No houses, shops, group inviters or LM givers. The access is to Members of this group only. You can have your friends join anytime. You may rez anywhere. Be advised the beach will be cleaned everyday just like RL

I hope you enjoy

Peace

SYX

You know I was out there right away to check it out. It is currently running an Epic wave. We are happy to see Syx back and thankful to him for bringing us a new place to throw out our boards and wander around. It really is beautiful! My pictures don’t do it justice. You will have to see it for yourself. If you are not currently a member of Monkey Cove Surfers, join the group and enjoy!

LSD is Back!

I was roaming the beach at Tai and just about to rezz my board when I noticed something new. A LSD board rezzer. A NEW LSD board rezzer. Could it be? Luscious Starship has come back and is creating again for us? Did I need a gold engraved invitation to try it out? No, I did not!

Luscious provided Sally LaSalle with the “LSD Comp tuned Board rezzer” for us to play with. My take is that it opens up the possibility to a potential comp with LSD boards. Most of the configurability options have been disabled (when compared to LSD previous surfboards). It is much harder to skim across and stand on the water.Since it is in a rezzer all competitors would be able to use the same board.

The SLSA has used LSD waves in competitions with great success, but has been unable to use the boards yet. Partially due to the wide variety of boards LSD has put out and also the with all the configuration options it is hard to keep the playing field level. With the latest board in a rezzer, it will be much easier to use it in a competition, if all the surfers have to rezz the same board.

So back to hopping on the board and trying it out.  It took me a bit to get used to. (Doesn’t it always?) But I started playing with the keys, to see out what did what… what keys to combine to make things happens. Turning took me a bit to figure out. Silly me kept just trying to use the side arrow keys to turn. I finally tried out that down arrow and side arrow and that made me turn in a low crouch. I haven’t found any scripted tricks, but there is a HELP button on the menu (when you left click the board) which explains how to perform all the tricks on the board, so I am going to go back and play some more to see what else I can make it do, if I can get my fingers to cooperate.

A lot of people missed LSD while Luscious Starship was on a small hiatus from SL. Having her back and creating is great for the sport. So naturally, I tracked her down and quizzed her on what is going on with LSD.

Cierra Theriac: Good to see you back in SL. Do you think you could tell me a little something about where LSD is at, what you are working on, that kind of thing…

Luscious Starship: I’m working on a nice tasty non physics full sim width wave that has a fast right break, a REAL break, because waves in reality move sideways a LOT faster than most in SL.

Cierra Theriac: I’ve been out playing with the new board on the rezzer on Tai. It’s fun. after I figured out how to turn. Laughs.

Luscious Starship: Hint: to carve a turn, hold the PgDn (or ‘c’) and side arrow at the same time. To bottom turn hold the PgDn, up arrow, and side arrow.

Cierra Theriac: Oh good to know, I will try that too. Are the boards in the rezzer on Tai going to be available to buy? (People are going to keep you busy)

Luscious Starship: You can actually buy one at Chi now. There’s an small LSD store there. In front of the store you can buy the board. It’s a copy version only right now.

Cierra Theriac: It is a new/updated version right?

Luscious Starship: Yes, is version 788. There have been a LOT of board revisions, I don’t think it ever stops, there’s always something not quite right it seems.

Cierra Theriac: Gotta keep tweaking, right?

Luscious Starship: nods There is a lot (I am working on). mesh mesh mesh, everything is mesh. The board, look at it carefully. It’s s double concave bottom, on the rocker, moving to single convex in the back. Just a reminder that the board shape is very real. The intention of the LSD board is to surf like an ASP surfer. It’s shortboard only now, and while if you stretch the board longer than 2.5m it will behave more like a longboard. The animations are definitely shortboard.

Cierra Theriac: if I could look like an ASP surfer I would be so stoked. (Note: ASP=Association of Surfing Professionals, a RL surfing association that conducts a World Tour contest and ranks the world’s best surfers. Anyone heard of Kelly Slater?11-time World Champion?)

Luscious Starship: In SL we can! lusciousstarship.blogspot.com is where I keep videos of waves and tricks and my SL surfing adventures 🙂

I’d like to thank Sally LaSalle, Anisha Ray, and Rayzza Rubble though for providing homes for my servers which keep LSD alive. Denise Foxtrot also has been a great friend and collaborator. Along with Colleen Brennan and everyone at Tsunami Beach!

Here’s a few hints I weaseled out of her, when surfing on the new board 🙂

want another hint? to turn use the “c” and side arrow
c = PgDn
also try the “e” key = PgUp
the PgDn or “c” is the “carve” key and essentially the accelerator
the down arrow will help you do a crazy turn
but the “c” or PgDn is best for creating a bottom turn and cutback, so bottom turn = PgDn + up arrow + side arrow
cutback = PgDn + side arrow
also in the main menu there is a button called “HELP/ADJUDA”, which will give you a complete instruction sheet available in over 10 languages

20 Questions: Surfer’s Perspective – QUENCH Spotter

submitted by Zelda Zimberman

1. Name:  QUENCH Spotter

2. Team:  Vibrations Surf Association (V.S.A.)

3. Surfing Since:  Before you were in diapers, lol  Started back in 2007.

4. Favorite Board and why?
The Doors! oh you said board. Let me get my glasses… I have over 38 boards in my inventory from various creators over the years. It would be easier to tell you what I don’t consider a favorite. Overall  the one I ride the most is still my SJA Custom Vibes board.

5. Favorite Wave and why?
The Epic @ Majini Island. It was where it all started and home. 🙂 I believe it’s still one of the tallest and longest waves around.

6. How did you come across surfing on SL and what was your first initial reaction to it?
Looking for a man eating shark @ Bishara Resorts. Seeing a wall of water rushing at me. Later weeks a friend asked me if I wanted to go watch a surf competition. Come to find out that was a VSA Surf Jam competition hosted by VSA on Majini Island.

7. Are you involved in the SLSA (second life surfing association) in any way? (competitions, events, etc.)
I have competed and judged in many SLSA competitions in the past. I’m retired from all competing and events.  Enjoying my own privacy at home.

8. What are your thoughts or opinions on the direction on the SLSA from 2012 and beyond?
SLSA was a great way to pull together all the new and pro surfers, form individual teams, and bring them for an awesome gathering and expedition of talents! I hope the same for the future.

9. What do/did you find positive and negative about it?
The Positive: It added a neutral ground for surfers and surf teams to compete. The negative was losing, lol.

How would you like to see it improve more?
During my seasons of riding I’ve seen many changes: Effecting lag, rules, sportsmanship, conduct, ect.  As for an improvement I’d say I would like to see more surf islands and surf events with a PG rating to allow younger people into the surf community.  BTW Ms. Zelda, this is an extra question you asked heheh.

10. Do you compete in any surfing competitions SLSA or non?
Noooo, Papa is retired.

11. What do/did you find gratifying and dissatisfying about  competitions?
Gratifying would have to be the rush of excitement one gets when riding that first perfect wave and knowing your points aren’t going to suck. Dissatisfying is the drama  and politics that can get involved to ruin the fun of it for many people.

12. How do you feel about the SLSA using non SSI boards for competions? (ex; HP5, LSD, Action)
LSD is a board company?  Damn I am old.  I was born on SSI boards. I’ve used  and competed with other boards in other competitions which I was fine with. When I rode in SLSA events we used SSI. My feelings are this. If a venue is going to allow a multitude scripts, (different boards) then the event should be placed on just that type of board. So say SLSA or another host has 10 comps at 10 sims for a season and comp number 4 is allowing other boards such as LSD for example. Then comp number 4 should be broken up into sub events where each scripted board has its own comp and a rider can only choose 1 comp to ride and place in that event for points to be counted for comp number 4. Some people in the past I’ve seen get butt hurt over this. Get over it and put a band-aid on your rash. It’s simple really.

“Indy Cars” and “NASCARS”  are both awesome car races. Why in the hell  would you  make a competition  where both cars are racing on the same track at the same time? Sure have an event like that. After all this is Second life, But if that is allowed and not under the terms i stated above then it’s obvious to me a “show of creators scripts” and not in the favor of the rider and not in the best interest of the new rider trying to make a break threw.. unless you title it a “Carnival Free For All.” So to sum up my answer, keep the engines alike for the competition you are hosting. Multiply  the competition by events for each class of scripts.

13. If you are currently inactively involved in competitons (surfing, judging, etc.) what was the reason for leaving? Would you want to come back and participate?
I wouldn’t call it “currently inactively involved” I choose to call it retired. I had so much fun and so many awesome memories from surfing, competing, judging ect. My real life work schedule was a major contributor. Some personal drama I don’t wish to disclose and personal conflicts. Now I enjoy time to my wife tranquilitie and my rl son here in sl in my free time. I still freestyle surf time to time but do not wish to compete any longer.

14. What are your thoughts on the team dynamics?
Ahh the memories! A team should all get along and respect each brother and sisters personal lives outside the surf community as well as in the surf community, and never crossing each others lines. We had fun back in the day competing against other teams on the surf but when it came time to beach, the boards there was a feeling of unity with all the teams, and we respected each others beliefs and principles.

Is there a team you particularly like? Why?
Sure Vibes!! lol Guess there are so many teams out there I remember having the unlimited respect for.  Some awesome people!

15. Is there anyone on here that particularly had an impact when it came to surfing, mentoring, and overall being a role model for you? Who and why?
Robin Choche. Robin took me under her wing and spent many hours training and coaching as my personal coach before her departure from sl. She was my gateway to where I am and whom I am today. 🙂

16. What was your favorite moment or memory on surfing here?
My first win at Neart SLSA Pro may 2008. There were many more memories I hold sacred. 🙂

17. Is there anyone you know or knew that isn’t active as much in surfing and would like to see come back? Who and why?
Yes my fallen brothers and sisters that passed away. Names not mentioned.

18. Many people have strong opinions when it comes to SL surfing and RL surfing. What is your take on the comparison?
Since I was stung by a stingray in rl I pretty much limit my time out on a board in rl.  One thing people need to understand is that some people in sl are or have some form of disability where they will never get the opportunity to get on a real life surfboard. Why over dramatize things buy saying “Oh this board is more like rl then this”. It should be about the experience you feel at that exact moment. Not because some idiot says you have to use this one because this is more like real life surfing. If someone wants to brag about their real life surfing then just hit the red X and enjoy!

19. Do you have any advice for new SL surfers on here?
Have fun! Explore your sl the way it was meant to be explored. When on a board, live for the moment for yourself, buy a good rash guard, and “Shut Up And Ride!”.

20. Any other thoughts?
Yeah, how much did you say I’m getting paid for this?
