(Reprint) Some people have asked me (Cierra) how to approach surfing these waves for the competition. Well, we tried to make it fun and interesting. First, take off is from the left/east. There’s a platform and a buoy out there to help you find your way. With multiple waves running, it is up to the surfer’s creativity to make an awesome ride. Pick the waves that make the most of your style! I have been asked if wave hopping is legal. Short answer, yes! But how it will be scored is up to the judges. My advice would be to make wave transitions look purposeful, interesting and in control. Freesurfing, you could wave hop all day. I wouldn’t suggest that for the competition. Transitions look most impressive when they are lateral or forward. Plus, lots of wave hopping is going to make for a really long comp. Remember, you don’t want to belly. Sliding off the back of the wave and struggling to find another wave is going to be loss of wave and affect your length of ride points.  Plan your ride out keeping the judging criteria in mind: style and control (40%), tricks (40%), and length of ride (20%).

Now, wax up that board and get out there!

Taking a breather

Taking a breather

There must be at least 30 people registered, for both the Open and the Pro to be held. If less than 30 people register the events will be combined into one to be held on March 28th. Top 20 ranked surfers you still need to register! Your registration into the event is not automatic. This event is open to any SLSA member, even if you have never competed before (you will be competing in the Open event). If you are new to the SLSA, you will need to join the SLSA group and the SLSA Forums.

Full event rules can be found on the SLSA Wiki.

Also, if you would be interested in working the event, contact any SLSA director.
