20 Questions: Surfer’s Perspective – Curshaw MacTagairt

Part of a continuing series
submitted by Zelda Zimberman

Curshaw1. Name: Curshaw Resident (display name: Curshaw MacTagairt)

2. Team: Surfcrazy

3. Surfing Since: Dec. 2010 (this account), Aug. 2007 (my main account)

4. Favorite Board: Any SSI short board–comfortable, easy to maneuver

5. Favorite Wave: Teahupoo–realistic, a little more challenging

6. How did you come across surfing on SL and what was your first initial reaction to it?
I first discovered surfing under my main account, “F. E.,” at The Weather Channel Sims and loved it so much, I went to just about every surfing venue I could find. I liked that people in SL cared enough about surfing in RL that they’d created a way to enjoy it in SL. I created this account as a dedicated surfer in Dec. 2010 and started surfing comps not long after.

7. Are you involved in the SLSA (second life surfing association) in any way? (competitions, events, etc.)
My first comp was the St. Valentine’s Challenge, February 2011, and I actually placed! Well, I placed fourth, but… I placed. I continue surfing in comps and sometimes go to events too.

8. What are your thoughts or opinions on the direction on the SLSA from 2012 and beyond?
I’d like to see “Fun” included as an official judging category, but it wouldn’t be fair because then I’d always win every comp.

9. What do/did you find positive and negative about it?
How would you like to see it improve more?: Nothing negative. Very little drama. I’m very grateful to those who serve as judges and other comp personnel, who give up their own chances to surf. Even when they give me low scores, I kind of see where I went wrong. I’d much rather get an honest low score than an inflated high score, which I’ve never known to happen.

10. Do you compete in any surfing competitions SLSA or non?
Mainly SLSA–I do almost all the SLSA comps and a few of the non-SLSA ones.

11. What do/did you find gratifying and dissatisfying about  competitions?
I love the sense of camaraderie and how total strangers soon become friends. Also I like Rayzza’s infamous toilet humor. I can’t really say I find anything dissatisfying about comps.

12. How do you feel about the SLSA using non-SSI boards for competitions? (ex; HP5, LSD, Action)
It’s good to change it up now and then. With the HP5 you get more realistic action and there’s a learning curve, but it feels more intuitive. The LSD also has a different feel to it but not as much of a learning curve.

13. If you are currently inactively involved in competitions (surfing, judging, etc.) what was the reason for leaving? Would you want to come back and participate?  N/A

14. What are your thoughts on the team dynamics? Is there a team you particularly like?
I like how my team captain doesn’t drop me even when I get some of the lowest scores in the comps! Which team do I particularly like? Well, Mick would kill me if I didn’t say Surfcrazy, but I do have a spot in my heart for Tsunami too. I was approached by several people on different teams asking whether I’d be interested in being on their teams, and they were actually disappointed when I said I’d already joined a team! But I don’t really focus on the teams–more on the individual surfers. It’s always a treat when the heat draws have me surfing in the same heat as a legend like Bullet or Colls. That’s the beauty of it–when a commoner like me can surf right next to surf royalty.

15. Is there anyone on here that particularly had an impact when it came to surfing, mentoring, and overall being a role model for you? Who and why?
There have been so many that I really can’t name them all. Early on there was Abel Halderman. Of course there’s Mick Lunasea, my team captain. Colleen Brennan, Lanky Silvercloud, CK Carver, Jordan Mendle, and too many others to mention. (If you’re reading this, you just might be one of them!)

16. What was your favorite moment or memory on surfing here?
At my very first comp, I was treated like family from the start. I’d never even met these people and they still made me feel very much at home. At the end of it, someone said “You’re one of us now” and it made me feel so good.

17. Is there anyone you know or knew that isn’t active as much in surfing and would like to see come back?
I wish Philip Linden would do some comps with us. Actually, maybe he already does, as an alt. Ever notice Philip and I are never online at the same time? 😉 Earlier this year the answer would’ve been Colleen Brennan, but then we were all relieved when she came back from a months-long hiatus to join us again. We didn’t know what to think–she hadn’t been heard from since Christmas Eve and of course we all thought the worst (that she’d been kidnapped by Santa).

18. Many people have strong opinions when it comes to SL surfing and RL surfing. What is your take on the comparison?
SL surfing’s the same as RL surfing as to basic technique. Turning, paddling, etc., work the same way on the wave whether virtual or real–the only difference is whether you’re moving your feet and body, or making judicious use of your fingers. It takes just as much skill to surf in SL as in RL, though it’s not as easy to lose your balance in SL. Then some things are totally different–you don’t get water up your nose or sand in your shorts in SL, and can’t get eaten by (most) sharks. Of course I don’t use a board in RL, and that’s part of the beauty of SL for me–that I can be a board surfer.

19. Do you have any advice for new SL surfers on here?
Don’t worry about winning your first comp, or even your 10th. Just relax and have fun. Ten years from now, you may forget the money you won in a comp, but you’ll never forget the good times you had with friends.

20. Any other thoughts?
Wish I could take credit for this one: The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun!

20 Questions: Surfer’s Perspective – Revlon Benoir Lunasea

Part of a continuing series
submitted by Zelda Zimberman

Revlon1. Name:  Revlon “Revy” Benoir-Lunasea

2. Team:  Surfcrazy

3. Surfing Since:  SL Surfer SInce 2007

4. Favorite Board:
My favorite make of board is the HP5 because it feels the most real to me.  But my fav board of all time is the pink “Kiss Mick”  board Mickey made for me.

5. Favorite Wave:
I have always been a fan of Leo’s wave especially the Teahupoo.  Lately tho I am really falling for the new LSD Mesh wave.

6. How did you come across surfing on SL and what was your first initial reaction to it?
As a RL surfer, one of my first things I did after learning to attach my hair to my skull and not my knee, was go surfing.  First wave was at Surf City.

7. Are you involved in the SLSA (second life surfing association) in any way? (competitions, events, etc.)
Yes  I do compete at comps and do like to volunteer as a Judge, EC or make rashies.

8. What are your thoughts or opinions on the direction on the SLSA from 2012 and beyond?
The SLSA is not just a few individuals sitting around making arbitrary decisions.  It is US  the membership the surfers.  Sure we have lost a few members and a some beach real estate, HOWEVER, we have grown by over 100 new members many of whom are actively involved and gained some new and exciting beaches. I would say over all we have a bright future.

9. What do/did you find positive and negative about it?
Reference #8, The SLSA is all about the members. The great turn outs .. the fun banter in chats all great things.
.
How would you like to see it improve more?:  Improve… PEOPLE GET INVOLVED become a judge or a Marshall, run for Director.   If you have a business, why not  sponsor the season or donate a product to the fundraisers?

BUT! People it is not all about Money .. if there is an event just show up.. your SMILE alone is worth a million Lindens.

10. Do you compete in any surfing competitions SLSA or non?
Yes I have competed the SLSA Season, Vibes, and Pixel Comp.

11. What do/did you find gratifying and dissatisfying about competitions?
Let me think.. maybe my computer did not spawn a crazy virus during the comp that infected everyone on the grid and brought  the entire  meta verse to its’ knees.

12. How do you feel about the SLSA using non SSI boards for competitions? (ex; HP5, LSD, Action)
I think it is wonderful to see new boards and waves being used in comps.  I was very proud the comp hosted at Encinitas was one of the first non SSI comps with both and HP Wave and Board.

13. If you are currently inactively involved in competitions (surfing, judging, etc.) what was the reason for leaving? Would you want to come back and participate?
Well I am inactive .. because it is the off season.  I guess when the new season starts I will want to come back. Yeah this answer was lame .. and I will hate seeing it when it is in print.

14. What are your thoughts on the team dynamics? Is there a team you particularly like?
As official cheerleader and team mom here is what I have to say

LISTEN UP TUSNAMI!
HEY MONTEGO!
HELLO TAI CHI AND REEF RIDERS TOO!
WHY SO SERIOUS?
CAUSE SURF CRAZY IS HERE TO SAY
GO BIG OR GO HOME!
GOOOOOOO SURFCRAZY!

15. Is there anyone on here that particularly had an impact when it came to surfing, mentoring, and overall being a role model for you?
I was never really involved in the SLSA other than the Surf Festivals prior to this Season 1 2012.  During Surf Festival  I met some of the greatest people ever.  Of course the one person I must mention my hubby Mickey  who is my inspiration  but I would like to give a shout out to Figger Arun, Rayzza Rubble and Wil DeCuir, together they have taken me from mashing keys to giving me the confidence to enter a competition.

16. What was your favorite moment or memory on surfing here?
This is more like when you bake cookies in RL.  As the scent fills the kitchen all the wonderful memories of baking with your mom come back into focus. Every time you go to an awards ceremony, visit a break, or attend a comp  you get to enjoy the cumulative time you have spent with your SL Surfing Crew.

17. Is there anyone you know or knew that isn’t active as much in surfing and would like to see come back?
This question is easier than  question number 1 …. ROFL Lissa Sands. That girl used to slay me.  I would be laughing so hard I could not surf straight. And  Tauri … nothing like heading out for a weekend  of mayhem with Tauri.

18. Many people have strong opinions when it comes to SL surfing and RL surfing. What is your take on the comparison?
I have said in the forum:  Real Life and Second Life Surfing are not mutually exclusive nor are they potentially inclusive. It is like the Yin-Yang symbol, there is a little white in the black and a little black in the white.  Being an RL surfer just means you are an RL surfer.

19. Do you have any advice for new SL surfers on here?
LOL. Once in RL a freind took me snow skiing, told me I had to snow plow. On the way down I hit every rock, tree, squirrel, bush, and raccoon on the mountain. All the while being told to snow plow. Later that year, I took him surfing, told him paddle paddle paddle paddle, and he rag dolled all day long. At the end of each day .. we said the same thing .. I HAD A BLAST!  My advice to new surfers .. HAVE A BLAST.

20. Any other thoughts?
“If there is an exception to every rule, then every rule must have at least one exception; the exception to this one being that it has no exception.”

“There’s always an exception to the rule, except to the exception of the rule—which is, in of itself, an accepted exception of the rule.”

Shhh… we’re hunting wabbits

It’s very quiet out there right now. What are you doing with your between season time? Hopefully sim hopping and getting lots of free surfing in.

Who says RL surfing doesn’t look like SL surfing?

SLSA Season End Celebration and Awards Ceremony

SLSA+logo1The SLSA Season End Celebration and Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, Decmber 15th at 11 amSLT.

Not only are the season’s top surfers honored, new Hall of Fame inductees are announced as well. The season’s top two surfers automatically become part of the Hall of Fame, but there is an additional Hall of Fame inductee given to a member of the SL surfing community at large “for contributions to surfing which are pivotal and of great value to the entire surfing community over a prolonged number of years.” This person does not have to be a member of the SLSA. For  more information about this award and how to nominate someone visit the SLSA Forum topic for the SLSA Hall of Fame.

Two other awards are given out, that are nominated by members of the SL surfing community: the Angel Award and the Sportsperson award. For someone to receive these awards, they must be nominated and second received.

The Angel Award “is designed to recognise the person (male or female) that helped make this season a success, by contributing their time, effort, or simply their encouragement of surfers and staff, cheerfully and without seeking any recognition for themselves. They are the person that helped you and many others to have a fun season.” To read about this award and nominate someone go to the Angel Award topic on the SLSA Forum.

“The Sportsperson Award recognises the person that you feel displayed exemplary sportsmanship, displaying grace in victory or defeat, providing encouragement within and outside their own team, or making a sacrifice to assist another to the detriment of their own place. They are this season’s ‘good sport’.” Again go to the Sportsperson Award topic on the SLSA forum for information and to nominate the person you feel best exemplifies sportspersonship in the SLSA.

Nominations for all three will be accepted up to midnight on Tuesday, December 11th. That deadline is tomorrow, so get in there and make your nominations ASAP!
